The California Great Registers These are not really books, but rather they were the voting registrations. The 1894 Great Register lists name, age, height, complexion, color of eyes and hair, visible marks/scars, occupation, country of nativity, place of residence, precint, P.O. address, date of naturalization with place and court, and date of registration. What is included varies from register to register/year to year. These registers often list naturalization information and can be excellent records to search. They began about 1866 and go to about 1944. From 1892-1908 they contain physical descriptions and wealth of other information, whether a person could read or write etc. However, the voter registration applications for years later continued to have all this data, but was not included in the final copy of the Registers. Try to locate the voter registration applications as well. They are available at many county clerk-recorder's offices, California State Library, FHL microfilm, etc.
